Helping Black Businesses Flourish Through Community Support
What started as a Facebook group of over 3,500 members is now a dedicated platform — built to make finding and supporting Black businesses easier and more accessible than ever.
How It Started
In 2020, during the pandemic, our community came together and identified something that had been overlooked for too long — the lack of visibility for local Black-owned businesses, entrepreneurs, and services. Too many talented business owners were operating in our community without the recognition they deserved.
The Problem
Without that visibility, the local community could not support what they did not know existed — and without that support, many businesses struggled to sustain themselves or grow.
The Solution
That is why we created the Black Business Directory — a platform designed to promote, share, and increase the visibility of Black businesses and services across Derby and Nottingham. Think of it as the Yell.com for local Black businesses, giving them a dedicated space to be found, supported, and celebrated.
More Than a Directory
Beyond simply listing businesses, this platform also helps signpost current and aspiring business owners towards the resources they need to thrive — from grant funding and business support, to advice, training, qualifications, and marketing.
For Everyone
This directory is here to improve visibility and give people clear information in a diverse and connected economy. It is not about excluding anyone or giving unfair advantage to one group over another. People choose to support different businesses for different reasons at different times — whether that is local businesses, charities, social enterprises, or larger organisations. This directory simply helps people who want to find and support Black-owned businesses to do so more easily, while recognising the value of all businesses in our communities.
